Diversity and inclusion for many of us is now a regular conversation in the workplace and rightly so as it’s long overdue. In June I blogged about my thoughts on how #internalcomms practitioners can take action and go beyond just talking, and I also knew at the same time that I needed to increase my knowledge further to help others.
I spotted on Twitter a post by the lovely Harriet Small of ‘Comms over a coffee’ her article on how she was taking action to help communicators by launching a bespoke ‘Beginner’s guide to diversity, inclusion & belonging and the role of internal communication’ workshop. Having meet Harriet before I knew I couldn’t miss out and here are my thoughts from the workshop and for anyone #NewtoIC, it’s a brilliant investment for your CPD that’s also very affordable.
Through a mixture of videos, case studies, personal experiences and breakout sessions Harriet got us to explore further topics such as language, leadership support, the employee life cycle and the key enablers of engagement. All of this led nicely into how you can then apply your own internal knowledge and research to develop an #internalcomms strategy that produces actions and behaviour changes, rather than just words.
There were some great tips to help understand where your organisation in terms of D&I and the various protected characteristics we should think about within our communications. Harriett’s examples and analogies really got you to think about the gaps present within your organisation. It also reminded me of this blog by Martin Kurke about creating an inclusive culture.
One thing I loved about the workshop was that it got you to think about how you can get your own house in order, looking inwards at policies, practices and the behaviours that exist within your own organisation. Taking a moment to stop and reflect is something we perhaps all don’t do enough of, and it was an opportunity to think about the ethical aspects of our role as communicators.
For the few hours I spent taking part in the workshop I came away with my mind spinning around with thoughts and actions on how I can change my own #internalcomms practices. It was lovely to hear from a fellow comms professional who has designed, built and delivered a workshop from scratch with the personal passion and belief in making a difference to our workplaces.
Besides your own thoughts, you’ll leave with four key takeaway points that will really help you as you continue the conversation on diversity, belonging and inclusion:
- A clear thought out strategy for our business for where it is at
- No matter what our role is within internal communications, we all have a part to play
- The answers are out there, we just need to look for them or ask our community
